OUR STORY

Lone Star K9 Academy was started by Retired Sergeant Ryan Curving of the City of Paterson Police Department in Paterson, NJ. Ret. Sgt. Curving retired with 25 years of law enforcement experience with 15 years in the K9 Unit. While traveling across the country, he has witnessed many active K9 teams lacking proper training and guidance. As a police K9 trainer and former K9 unit supervisor, he is familiar with Police administration expectations as a professional K9 team. He has decided to make a difference in the Police K9 community and start his own K9 training courses. The Lone Star K9 Academy staff has been hand-picked for their K9 expertise and dedication to their K9 Unit and Community. The trainers strive to improve every K9 Team to represent better their Police department and the communities they serve. Once you train with LSK9A, you become part of our extended family.

RYAN CURVING

RETIRED SERGENT

My name is Ryan (Uncle Ryan) Curving, I'm a Retired Sergeant from the City Of Paterson in New Jersey. I have completed 25 years of service in the Law Enforcement Field. During the course of my career, I have been assigned to the Patrol Division, Community Police, Narcotics/ Drug Enforcement Administration(DEA) for 7 years before transferring to the K9 Division / Emergency Response Team in 2006. After graduating from the Bergen County Police K9 Academy, I returned to the City of Paterson and assumed the role of a K9 Handler with deployments for several Federal Agencies such  as the DEA, Homeland Security and ATF( Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms). As my career as a K9 Handler progressed, I took on a more leadership role in developing a community outreach program for schools and other organizations bridging the gap between Law Enforcement K9 atmosphere and the community.  With this new program, I was responsible for hand selecting social K9's  for the program as well as being able to fulfill the patrol responsibilities.  With the success of the Program, the Paterson Police K9 Unit began performing public demonstrations  for schools, church and private organizations across the Northern New Jersey and New York City area. As the demand for Paterson Police K9 Unit increased, I was directed to take on the responsibilities for K9 Selection, equipment, budgeting, K9 training and custodian of records for Training and K9 Certification, continuing education classes for the K9 Unit.
